Oomen Artist Statement
My art is deeply connected to my lifelong passion for gardening. Flowers, both as individual subjects and within broader landscapes, captivate me with their energy and life force. A visit to botanical gardens inspired me to explore their scale and beauty in my own work, aiming to convey the sensory experience of being fully immersed in these spaces. Just as gardens quiet the mind and awaken the senses, I hope my paintings offer a similar sense of presence and tranquility.
Oomen Biography
Born and raised in Kingston, Ontario, Hilda Oomen completed a BFA from Queen's University in 1984. Following her degree, she spent a summer in the Young Resident Artists program at the Banff Centre.
After almost a decade living and working as an artist in Toronto she relocated to a rural setting to immerse herself in lanscape painting while also cultivating a passion for large scale gardening.
Her work has been supported by several grants from the Ontario Arts Council and she has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions in Canada.
