Kim Cristopher + Isabelle Gauvreau

Kim Cristopher + Isabelle Gauvreau
May 25 - June 13, 2023
Artist Opening: Thursday, May 25, 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Kim Cristopher is a Canadian portrait and figurative painter living and working in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Her oil paintings capture the fragility, strength and beauty of the human condition. For Kim, the painting process constantly involves experimentation with oil paint for the love of the medium and quest for the abstract.

‘’My subjects are studies of introspection and determination, often with a display of attitude. Many confront the viewer with an unselfconscious direct glance, while others are caught in a tender moment of thought, hopefully leaving the viewer with an evocative and ambiguous narrative to ponder.”
- Kim Cristopher

Isabelle Gauvreau: This last series marks the natural continuity of my work. A culmination giving way to a new period where the body represented before is only presence; emotions, traces, spirit… An almost divine light crosses the paper, or crosses the darkness. Gold connects humanity and the divine. Raw and dark materials at the base that can become luminous after long work. It metamorphoses but remains stable and precious. The deep black Indian ink where the splashes are inscribed is also an important part of my approach. The Japanese paper plays a supporting role, parchment, document combining expression and human testimony.

“Being an artist means constantly healing and opening up your wounds, in the same movement”. - Anette Messager
