Working under the direction of the VP, Indigenous Ways and Decolonization (IW&D), and closely with the Director, IW&D, the Senior Manager will work to ensure Indigenous perspectives, worldviews, protocols and ways of being and knowing are integrated into all aspects of the NGC’s operations. The incumbent will also work as part of the team responsible for developing and implementing the NGC’s framework for the decolonization of Gallery practices and processes. This will include but is not limited to the development of organizational strategies, policies, processes, programs, education, and training that centre Indigenous thought. In close collaboration with the Director, Indigenous Ways and Decolonization, the incumbent provides strategic advice, research and analysis, and organizational support on various initiatives that further the NGC’s commitments to Indigenous peoples, right relations, self-determination and decolonization. This person will support the development and implementation of ongoing Indigenous education and training initiatives that will build capacity within the organization and engage audiences in innovative ways.

In collaboration with the Transformation and Inclusion Directorate, the Senior Manager, Policy, Protocols and Strategic Initiatives will support the development and implementation of the NGC’s justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (JEDI&A) action plan with an emphasis on relationships with Indigenous communities. A partner to the People, Culture and Belonging team, this person will support efforts to identify systemic barriers and integrate Indigenous worldviews and methodologies and JEDI&A into Human Resources, recruitment, retention, and advancement initiatives. In collaboration with the Senior Management team and others, the Senior Manager, Policy, Protocols and Strategic Initiatives supports and informs the decision-making process that develops and strengthens a culture of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion and cultural change. They will act as a trusted advisor and liaison to internal and external stakeholders to ensure activities are coordinated and streamlined within the organization based on the priorities outlined in the decolonization framework and JEDI&A action plan. Through inclusive and consultative processes, the Senior Manager works with colleagues across the NGC to support Indigenous priorities and focus on successful engagement with Indigenous communities, visitors, artists and other stakeholders. They will develop, coordinate and support communication with Indigenous communities that ensures understanding of strategic direction, and inclusive, Indigenous centred worldviews, while making connections between operational work and institutional goals and interdependencies.

Requirements
• Post-secondary level education or equivalent specifically related to Indigenous issues.
• Recent experience working with Indigenous communities and/or organizations.
• Experience working with Elders and knowledge keepers.
• Demonstrated understanding and 7-10 years experience working directly with Indigenous communities in the areas of self-determination, self-governance and community development.
• Demonstrated experience working in anti-oppression, decolonization, anti-racism, and self-determination environments and contexts.
• Demonstrated work experience with change management, changes in current practices, policies and process through an Indigenous and anti-racism lens.
• 7-10 years of working experience in roles of increasing responsibility, complexity, and demonstrated leadership.
• Strong project management experience with an ability to motivate, engage and foster good team relationships.
• Knowledge of administrative procedures and policies, and the NGC mandate and general functioning.
• Knowledge of Federal legislation impacting Indigenous peoples.
• Deep understanding of Indigenous rights, histories, and cultures of this land, as well as globally.
• Deep understanding of protocols for engaging with Indigenous communities.
• Deep understanding of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and how it can impact the Gallery.
• Excellent proven leadership, management, mediation, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to develop and deliver training/education initiatives internally and externally.
• Excellent public relations skills.
• Proven experience working with a Senior Management team, internal and external colleagues, representatives from federal agencies and ministries, and/or colleagues from the Indigenous arts community.
• Experience developing and managing budgets.
• Experience managing unionized staff and working collaboratively in team settings.
• French or an Indigenous language is considered an asset.
