To say there is an intimate relationship between sound and space is, perhaps, an obvious statement. It is however, rich ground for artistic production and a key point of departure for Electric Fields 2011. While our explorations of the interaction of the built environment with the physical qualities of sound are at the heart of the projects developed in 2011, the creative works presented lead to more significant and complex questions. Beyond the building volume and construction materials of a basilica, a museum or a swimming pool, how else is our sonic experience shaped by the space we are in?
There is no way for a document like this to translate our projects from 2011. They are inextricably bound to the time and space of their execution. Instead this web site is intended to continue the conversation started within these creative works, and act as a bridge to our symposium during EF2012. This symposium will consider four questions that emerged through the production of these projects. How does space shape sound? Can sound be spaceless? How does culture shape sound? and How does sound shape knowledge?
For the moment we invite you to explore the images and sounds recorded during EF2011. Put your headphones on, close your eyes and try to imagine another space.
