Roger Michel on Digital Archaeology, Possession and Authenticity

Roger Michel: To Have and to Hold: ?why possession matters so much in the context of cultural heritage assets (and how Tuscan robots might change all of that)

This talk will look at why cultural heritage objects evoke such strong emotions and spirited disputes, especially around issues of custody. Does physical custody, in this context, necessarily implicate issues of erasure and misappropriation? Will possession continue to matter so much as replication science continue to evolve? Will new technologies, including virtual embodiments of heritage material, change our idea of authenticity? Under what circumstances might copies provide satisfactory—or even superior—substitutes for original material? All of these questions—and more—will be examined against the backdrop of the IDA’s ongoing Elgin Marbles repatriation efforts.?
Roger Michel is the founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Digital Archaeology (IDA). The IDA operates globally, undertaking a huge variety of heritage projects, many of which are aimed at advancing social justice goals. Its principal partners are the UN, UNESCO and local and national governments. Michel has published and lectured frequently on various heritage conservation topics. He was a member of the faculty at Boston University Law School for twenty-five years, is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College (Oxford), and is co-publisher of?Arion Magazine. Michel is a graduate of Harvard and Oxford Universities.

Roger Michel: To Have and to Hold: ?why possession matters so much in the context of cultural heritage assets (and how Tuscan robots might change all of that)
