Surprising Surfaces showcases 16 hand-pulled prints made by 11 members of the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers' Connective. Traditionally, the printmaker’s materials include a rigid plate with a carved or etched image, ink, and paper. However, anyone with a few t-shirts knows that fabric can also be used as a printing surface, or ‘support.’ The artists presented in Surprising Surfaces have experimented by printing on fabric, wood, Plexiglas, cork and even slate, creating works of great depth and unity. Images of birds and trees printed on calla leaf ‘paper’ seem in harmony with their environment. The design of a Balinese sculpture printed on mahogany transports the viewer to an exotic place. Pine boughs printed in blue ink look especially cool and wintry on a smooth Masonite support.
