Jenny McMaster - Excellent Speakers and Listening Organisms

Jenny McMaster - Excellent Speakers and Listening Organisms
Ottawa School of Art | ByWard Market Campus | J.W. Stellick Gallery
On view until February 22, 2026
Free admission
Excellent Speakers and Listening Organisms invites visitors into a world where art is meant to be touched, heard, and explored through the body — not just the eyes.

Inspired by fungi, plants, and other more-than-human forms, Jenny McMaster’s sculptural works hum, resonate, and respond through sound exciters embedded in handmade abaca pulp forms. These works blur the boundary between sculpture and instrument, encouraging curiosity, attentiveness, and sensory engagement.

Public Programming: Touch, Listen, Play
The exhibition is supported by thoughtful and inclusive public programming designed to deepen the experience:

Touch Tours offer guided, hands-on access to the exhibition, centering tactile exploration and multi-sensory engagement. Open especially to the blind and low-sighted and their sighted guides and friends.

Playtime sessions invite visitors of all ages to interact freely with the works, encouraging experimentation, sound-making, and joyful discovery in the gallery.

Together, these programs expand the exhibition beyond traditional viewing, creating space for embodied learning, accessibility, and shared listening.

Whether you’re curious about experimental sound, tactile sculpture, or new ways of experiencing art, this exhibition — and its accompanying programs — invite you to slow down, tune in, and listen.
