BEAUCHEMIN / SABOURIN

REMINDER: BEAUCHEMIN/SABOURIN
Julie Beauchemin and Hugo Sabourin
January 19 - 20, 2023
Reception: Thursday, Janurary 19, 5:00PM - 8:00PM

Julie Beauchemin is an Ottawa-based artist, whose abstract paintings intersect between street art, narrative painting, discourse theory and art historical convention. Her work reflects complex consideration of narrative format in abstracted mark making. Working multiple media on the surface of the canvas support, she charges the single dimensional plane with an energetic depth that appears to be only a part of a larger visual entity. The quality of Beauchemin’s mark-making in paint, marker, oil stick, spray paint, and other materials, appears spontaneous, but upon longer consideration, we can see the deliberateness of colour selection, composition, and application. Beauchemin holds a Bachelor of Arts and Design with a major in Visual Arts from Université du Québec en Outaouais. Her work has been exhibited regionally at Galerie St-Laurent +Hill (Ottawa), in Gatineau at AXENEO7, Centre d’Exposition l’Imagier and Maison de la Culture, and at City Hall Art Gallery as part of the additions to the City of Ottawa Art Collection.

"My paintings contribute to an evolving contemporary discourse by defying rules. By defragmenting all genre, I employ all means of intervention using any media and any technique to achieve my pieces to convey an absence of rules principle. A metalanguage notion then emerges by presenting what could be for example, street art or graffiti, on a support that would suggest a more traditional approach to commercialized establishments." - Julie Beauchemin

Hugo Sabourin , alias YUGZ, is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Gatineau, Outaouais. A visual arts creator and drummer, he also works as a radio technician and producer. In 2007 a friend provoked introduced him to painting. Since then, he has developed and perfected his artistic practice. He has several solo exhibitions to his credit, notably at the St-Laurent + Hill gallery in Ottawa, at Espace Cascades de la TOHU in Montreal, at the Shenkman Arts Center in Orléans, as well as at the Galerie Montcalm and the House of Culture of Gatineau. His work has also been shown at special events, including Nuit Blanche Ottawa + Gatineau (Canadian Museum of History), at the inauguration of Parc Frédéric-Bach during the festivities for the 375th anniversary of Montreal, and at the fair Radio-Canada artist of the now defunct Festival de l'Outaouais Émergent.

"I am a visual artist who lives and works in Vieux-Hull, near the Ottawa River. The pandemic caused me to reinvent my artistic process. Ever since, with the help of different digital applications, I´m sampling my surroundings, so I can reimaginate it, and paint it with my fingers on my cell phone. The final version of the digital artwork is printed on acrylic and mounted on a wood panel. " - Hugo Sabourin
