The Executive Director is an entrepreneurial, creative, and inspiring individual who will provide visionary leadership for the Ottawa School of Art (OSA) to develop and execute a forward-thinking strategic plan that advances the OSA’s mission, vision, values, short- and long-term goals. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director leads all aspects of OSA’s programs and operations to foster the financial, organizational and programming vitality of the school. Result-oriented, this resourceful individual will foster and nurture a collaborative, creative and inclusive work environment, direct and mentor OSA staff and faculty, enhance the curriculum, and ensure efficient and effective management of human, financial, and technological resources. This individual will identify, cultivate, and secure revenues for OSA’s growth and sustainability as an institution in service to Ottawa-Gatineau’s diverse communities and lead fundraising efforts from public and private sector sources. As a thoughtful leader, this individual will participate in current conversations concerning equity, diversity, inclusion, and access and act as a passionate advocate for OSA and arts education in the community, in Ottawa and beyond.

Duties will include:
Program direction and development
Direct and actively participate in the development of a comprehensive visual arts education program consistent with the school’s strategic objectives, including digital programming
Oversee the programs’ delivery across two campuses, online, as well as in the community through outreach initiatives
Review, evaluate and modify (if necessary) the programs as well as the pedagogy to meet changing needs of students
Ensure that there is effective marketing and promotion for all programs offered by the school

Budgeting, Financial management and Fundraising
Develop the annual budget with the Finance Officer for approval by the Finance Committee and the Board
Implement Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure school performance and success
Track the school’s financial performance and ensure operations are on budget
Ensure that clear and comprehensive financial records are kept, financial systems are secure and software and hardware are up to date.
Oversee funding opportunities from the public and private sectors, and grant applications
Oversee fundraising strategy and donor stewardship

Administrative duties and governance
Develop, revise and maintain policies, procedures and standards to ensure sound and efficient financial, human resources and administrative oversight
Actively participate in all board meetings and committees, including the Executive Committee and Finance Committee meetings
Prepare materials for the Board and its committees and report on the school’s programs and activities to the Board of Directors
Assist the Board Secretary with the provision of minutes
Report to funding agencies and any public bodies as required
Oversee IT activities to ensure the organization is supported and protected

Personnel management
Provide collaborative, sound and supportive leadership and guidance to both permanent employees and contractors
Facilitate all hiring, on-boarding and off-boarding tasks as required
Develop and execute employee engagement, retention and attraction strategies and programming
Maintain standards for instructors’ contracts for service
Maintain and implement OSA’s personnel policies to ensure a safe, equitable and inspiring workplace
Carry out regular performance evaluations of staff

Community liaison and development
Develop contacts and liaise with other arts organizations and related institutions locally, provincially and nationally
Represent and advocate for the school including to municipal and government bodies
Promote a better understanding of the role, policies and programs of the school.

Education and Experience:
– A post-secondary degree in Fine Arts or a related discipline, or equivalent experience; with demonstrated experience in education programming
– 3-5 years’ experience in business management for arts/not-for-profit organizations
– Demonstrated success in organizing and executing charity fundraising events
– 3+ years’ experience in program/project development and management
– 3+ years’ experience managing employees, human resource programs
– Full computer literacy in word processing and spreadsheet software packages, eg. Microsoft Word and Excel

Qualifications
– A broad and comprehensive knowledge of the contemporary art scene and of fine arts training
– Highly analytical with experience in strategic and financial planning
– Understanding of theories of policy development and governance
– Knowledge of the granting practices of government agencies, charitable foundations and corporations
– Ability to supervise staff and take disciplinary or corrective measures when necessary
– Experience in dispute resolution/de-escalation
– Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
– Ability to plan and coordinate multiple projects with fixed deadlines
– Experience in a non-profit environment (working with staff, board and clients in a variety of capacities)

Assets to this position:
– Bilingual in both official languages (oral and written)
– Knowledge of OSA’s origins, history and role in the community
– Knowledge of OSA’s programs and educational philosophy
– Experience in volunteer management
– Experience in using database query and reporting tools

OSA offers a strong benefits package and a stimulating, professional work environment. The starting salary will be based on the successful candidate’s training and experience. The position is full-time, hours of work are flexible. While some flexibility is possible, the role requires an in-person presence at the workplace.
